David Martinez -Moreno explores the condition of living organisms as works of art using -woody plant- organisms as his primary material. Woody plant organisms outlive most living beings including humans and these organisms have an exceptional plasticity that allows Martinez-Moreno to scale the object to a human scope. Further through the transformative power of biotechnology, Martinez-Moreno is able to sculpt biofacts -biological artifacts in between man made and non made. With his work, Martinez-Moreno questions the ownership and authorship of living beings as well as the literal survival of the artworks in terms of cultural selection (if the work is relevant in culture, it will survive). Martinez-Moreno explores what it means to “grow” instead of “make” artwork and its art historical implications.
